Europe Day. Scotland Goes to Brussels. Yes4EU

Scotland Goes To Brussels!

Scotland Goes to Brussels. This week a delegation of Independence supporters went over to the EU Parliament to talk to and lobby MEPs sympathetic to our campaign for independence.

.

The group included Yes4EU, Europe for Scotland, two former MEPs, and the Scottish IndyPodcasters. One of the IndyPodcasters is Marlene Halliday and she made sure she had our Pensioners for Indy T-shirt with her!

There will be much more to say about the outcome of this venture. For the moment let’s just was a very successful trip. So keep a look out in the press and on social media.

And obviously BBC Scotland will be asking Laura Kuennsberg to interview everyone who was there. Not!

Europe Day, 9th May

But what will definitely happen is a free event in Edinburgh on Europe Day, 9th May, organised by Yes4EU. This year is special as it is the 75th Anniversary of the Schuman Declaration which ultimately led to the formation of the European Union.

The event is called Scotland in Europe: Good for Scotland, Good for the EU It will be an opportunity to hear how an Independent Scotland would be welcome back into the EU family of nations.

We will hear messages of support from current MEPs and others, recorded during this week’s fact-finding mission. Former Scottish MEPs Heather Anderson and Alyn Smith joined that trip and they will also be at the Europe Day event.

Yes4EU is aiming for a lively discussion exploring the positive impact of Scotland’s presence in the European Union. And that positive impact is not just for Scotland itself, but for the wider European community. There are opportunities that being part of the EU will bring to Scotland. But let’s remember that will also contribute to the overall prosperity of Europe.

Until 9th May, here are some photos from the Brussels trip

One of the people who was contacted for suggestions on how to approach the Scotland Goes to Brussels fact-finding mission over to Brussels was European commentator Kirsty Hughes. Kirsty has been a guest speaker at several our of Edinburgh Group’s meetings.

The Case Against Global Britain

You’ve probably heard the slogan ‘Global Britain’. It emerged as a sort of call to action post-Brexit. It’s mostly heard down in Westminster and mostly emanates from Tory Party politicians, activists and apologists. Though you’d probably find some UKIP and Brexit Party members mouthing it as well. If there are any of those still paying their subscriptions.

Actually Global Britain is actually more than a post-Brexit slogan. It’s an organisation set up 20 years ago to pursue that Brexiteer vision of a UK freed from EU shackles. And yes, with it come echoes of those times when a lot of the globe appeared pink on on atlases and maps. If you want a look at their agenda, look here.

But is there any real substance in this offer of renewed economic strength and global influence? Or is it a mirage?

Robert (Andy) Anderson of Yes Perth City has pulled together a lot of information, found financial trends, made comparisons with other countries and other decades, and put them together in this video.

UK Unionist supporters continually attack Scottish Independence. This is a look at their Global Briain to show that it is actually failing us all.

Dr Kirsty Hughes: Scotland & the Brexit Deal

Julia Laurie of Edinburgh & Lothians P4Indy writes:

Dr Kirsty Hughes is Director and founder of the Scottish Centre on European Relations. A researcher, writer and commentator on European politics and policy, she has worked at a number of leading European think tanks. She has published extensively, as well as contributing to a wide range of national and international media outlets. Her recent research focus includes: the UK, Scotland and Brexit. This is link to an article Kirsty published on Monday the 25th of January – England’s Scotland Panic – What is to be Done?

Kirsty talked to us on three different topics, firstly “the previous view of the EU towards the UK  and their views now”, secondly, “the EU view of Scotland”, and thirdly “border issues”. I was going to write a little of what she said, but decided it will be so much more interesting for you to listen to the recording.

Our members had some very interesting questions :

  • Can you explain what article 16 is?
  • Travel and trade issues between Scotland and England when we are Independent.
  • Can Scotland work directly with the EU at the moment?
  • Do you think joining EFTA is a good idea, and would the current members agree to us joining?
  • Will Ireland reunite before Scotland becomes Independent?
  • Also, many questions about the requirement for policy papers, and a firm vision of an Independent Scotland from our SNP government.

There were many more questions, but I hope the above has given you a reasonable sample of how interesting the Q&A session was.

Our next Edinburgh & Lothians Group meeting:

At our next meeting on March the 9th, our speaker is George Gunn. George  has been a deep-sea fisherman, a driller for oil in the North Sea, a journalist, playwright and poet.

I  have one of his books, The Great Edge, a story that brings together lives -ancient and modern – on the northern plateau where Scotland stops and starts, where history and myth fuel everyday reality, and where nothing is as it seems It sounds like a fascinating read,  and I  hope to read it before George’s talk.  I think it will be a very interesting and fascinating meeting.
