Voices for Scotland …

….is the external arm of the Scottish Independence Convention (SIC). Pensioners for Independence is one of the stakeholder groups of SIC and we send representatives to the SIC Board Meetings.

As things ramp up for the Holyrood Elections – and hopefully an early independence referendum after that – Voices for Scotland has been ramping up their social media presence with a series of online events. You can catch up with those from their event archive.

They also have an active campaign asking folk to make a short video and upload it to the Voices website. You can go to the website for encouragement and help in doing this

What are your hopes for an independent Scotland? Upload a short video or a photo and a couple of sentences on why you want Scotland to be independent. The more we share our positive visions for a future Scotland, the more connected we become around a community of ideas for the country we want to be.

Here’s what they are asking us to do ….. and why

The more people get involved, the more stories we have and voices advocating an independent Scotland. This shows a growing collective will for a better, independent country. All you have to do is record a short video describing your hopes for an independent Scotland and upload it to the Voices for Scotland website.‘

Independence is about more than any individual, political party or idea. Independence is about a better future & a better country that works for everyone.That’s why we’re doing things a bit differently. No party politics, no Yes/No labels, no big egos. Just voices for Scotland.’

Scottish Polling – 30 March

The latest Survation Scottish Poll from 30 March gives us a baseline for how the parties are doing in the Holyrood campaign.

  • the SNP ahead in both constituency and list votes, on 49% and 37% respectively.
  • the Tories sit on 21% and 18% neck and neck with Labour 20% and 19%.
  • the Greens on 11% in the list which puts them ahead of the Liberal Democrats who are on 9% and 8%.
  • the Alba Party is reported as 3% which  is well short of the 5% that is needed to have a chance of winning List seats.

However it’s early days and polling figures could change very quickly.

Survation also report on the respective popularity of party leaders:

The polling for Alex Salmond isn’t lookng very helpful for the Alba Party. His ratings are worse than Boris Johnson.

Effects of Holyrood Inquiries

The Survation poll included a question asking if Nicola Sturgeon and Alex Salmond had gone up / down in people’s estimation after recent appearances during the Holyrood Committee Inquiry and the independent Ministerial Conduct Inquiry. Again, not good news for Mr Salmond.

A Help or a Hindrance?

And finally, when asked if Alex Salmond helps or hinders the cause of Scottish Independence, he is seen as hindering it. Altogether an extraordinary – and sobering – result for the former FM who brought us an SNP majority administration and then negotiated the Edinburgh Agreement for the 2014 referendum.

Have Your Say in the Future Governance of Scotland 

Some 11 years ago a small group of Scots decided to draft a ‘model’ written constitution for Scotland rather than just talk about the need for one.  The Constitution for Scotland Project (CfS) has grown from that modest beginning. It advocates Scottish independence as a matter of community democracy. And it exists to encourage consultation on a draft constitution.

The project has moved on to its next stage. The consultation provides an opportunity for anyone who wishes to contribute to the future governance of Scotland. Scots are invited to contribute suggestions for amendments and additions to the basic draft. In this way, it will become a real People’s Constitution. So we will create it from the grassroots up.

Our Article In the National

The article was published in the National on 28 May. We were asked to contribute to the series which they are running just now highlighting the groups who have received grants from the Scottish Independence Foundation.

Here’s the text of the article which was written by Alan Logue co-Convenor of our National Group.

Our age group had the highest proportion of those who rejected constitutional change in 2014. We reformed Pensioners for Independence in early 2017 because we considered that a group run by pensioners was better placed to put our message across, raise the issues that most concern us – especially those that failed to convince us to vote Yes in 2014 – and convince our peers of the benefits of constitutional change.

Edinburgh was the first group to be convened and after some months Greater Glasgow followed and some activities started in Aberdeen and Perth. Street stalls were run, speakers were arranged and local meetings held.

The Declaration – the letter of Liberty

Yesterday, had things been otherwise, I would have been up in Arbroath celebrating the 700th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration. I’m sure that many of you would have been there too. And I’m sure that at some point we will be there enjoying a belated gathering.
